The 10th edition of Safaricom Sports Personality of the Years,SOYA, awards will only fete most deserving achievers when the event kick off on December 6 in Nairobi.

SOYA panel of judges chairman, Omulo Okoth said only individuals and teams that posted outstanding performance between January and December will be feted.

Omulo added that teams that were not included in last edition following the deadline nomination will be included in this year's edition.

"There are teams whose calenders stretch to the other year, in that case we will stretch them to the following year," said Omulo.

There will be no new category from last year's 16 even though the organizers scrapped the Come Back category won by Pamela Jelimo last year.

"Our categories will remain as before unless the panel, after sitting will decide otherwise based on emerging needs and public output," added Omulo.

The panelists will look at the emerging talents and promising sports talents, outstanding discipline and integrity for the Sportsmanship and role model.

For team categories, the panel will single out team sport, character, fair play and cohesion in the team among others. Federation and Community hero must demonstrate the sports development and in their respective associations as well as show good financial management.

The awards which will be celebrating its 10th anniversary to coincide with the country's 50th anniversary received a shot in the arm Tuesday after Safaricom, the title sponsor for the past five years donated Ksh. 12 million.

Paul Tergat, SOYA founder and patron emphasized that this year's edition will be very special.

"When i look back before this award, i can only appreciate pride sports has brought to this country. The days when sportsmen and women would jet back into the country with their medals hanged on their neck only to disappear in oblivion are long gone," added Tergat, an IOC member.
