Schools' hockey quarters at City Park Stadium

City Park Stadium is set to reverberate with youthful talent when the girl’s hockey quarterfinals of the Nairobi Secondary Schools Sports Association take the center stage from Friday.

The preliminary rounds and play-offs were completed at Moi Nairobi Girls on Saturday.

Six schools who finished top and second at the pool stage qualified for the quarters automatically. Hosts Moi Nairobi Girls and Parklands Arya qualified from Pool A; Mt. Laverna and Buru Buru Girls from Pool B and Hillcrest Secondary and Pangani from Pool C.

Three teams, St. George’s, Loreto Convent Msongari and Ngara battled it out in the play-off to qualify for the quarters. It was St. George’s and returnees Ngara who qualified.

In the quarterfinals, Moi Nairobi Girls will set the tempo by playing against St.Georges paving way for the match between Pangani Girls and Buru Buru Girls from 11 am. Hillcrest Secondary will then play against Parklands Arya and Mt. Laverna face Ngara Girls from 3 pm.

In the last preliminary matches on Saturday, Moi Nairobi Girls scored 11 goals and conceded one. Sarah Achungo who emerged as the top scorer in the preliminaries with eight goals scored three against State House Girls. Cassandra Dacha, Hannah Wasidwa and Mercy Cherono added one goal each.

The hosts then scored five goals against Statrehe Girls. In this match, Caren Jemutai scored three goals and Cherono two. Eunice Wandia scored the consolation goal for Starehe Girls. Ngara Girls finished third in Pool C after they drew 1-1 with Kianda. Mitchelle Wambui scored for Ngara and Wema Mumma for Kanda.

Loreto surprise Moi Nairobi Girls

Loreto Convent Msongari suprisingly held Moi Nairobi Girls to a barren draw but Pangani’s Habiba Hassan and Karen Jerop scored one goal each against Kianda for a 2-0 win.

In the playoff, St. George's were held to a barren draw by Ngara and Loreto Convent Msongari but won 2-1 and 2-0 in penalty flicks to proceed to the quarter final. Cindy Kate scored the only goal against Loreto Convent Msongari to proceed to the quarters.

In the boy’s category, Highway Secondary were no match for Lenana. They conceded seven goals. Joseph Githinji scored three goals, Brian Chemonges two while Simon Leiyan and Eric Mburu added one each.

Nairobi School were 3-1 winners over Starehe Boys. Harry Kiyego scored two goals and Joseph Nyaguti one for nairobi School with Rolex Mandal replying for Starehe Boys Center. Parklands overran Highway 6-2.

Eric Kamau and Martin Mzera scored two goals each for Parklands while Michael Opere and William Malawi added one each. Ibrahim Rashid scored two goals for Highway Secondary.
