Spanish clubs interested in three Starlets

  • Esse Akida who scored five goals at the annual COTIF women's International tournament in Spain could be one of the players who attracted interest from Spanish clubs.

Three Harambee Starlets players could be headed to Spain for trials and a possible professional contract after being wooed by Spanish clubs during a week-long international outing to the country.

David Ouma, the Harambee Starlets coach remained tight lipped on the names. He explained there was need for further consultation with the relevant clubs, FKF and club officials before going public. 

The coach did not deny that three players had been approached by Spanish clubs. “Its true three of our players have been scouted, however we will not release the names before we hold further discussions with the Football Kenya Federation management on the way forward,” Ouma stated.

The landed an invitation to play in the  Spanish annual COTIF women's International Tournament and finished a commendable fourth in the six-team team touranament where Spedag's team forward Esse Akida was ranked top scorer with five goals.

They are expected back in the country Wednesday morning.

Akida, a former Kenya Methodist University (KEMU) player scored a hat-trick to lead Kenya 3- 0 against Benfica. She displayed her sterling performance with a brace to put the Starlets ahead in a 3-1 win against RCD-Espanyol in their group 'A' match. She is the top scorer in the ongoing Kenya women's premier league with 13 goals.

Harambee Starlets lost 0-2 to Levante in a friendly played on August 9 in Spain. In this match, Maria Rocafull and Levante captain Sonia Prim scored in either half  for the hosts who were using the match to prepare for the new season.

Asked about the COTIF tournament, national head coach Ouma said: “We are happy we recorded two wins in the event, but above all that we got a chance to play in such a tournament.”

The team is using the events as a build up ahead of the forthcoming Africa Women Cup of Nations (AWCON) championship slated for November 19 to December 3 in the two cities of Yaounde and Limbe in Cameroon.
