Strathmore and Sliders battle for second spot

Strathmore University has an edge over Sliders in the battle for a second-place finish in the Kenya Hockey Union women's national league after they beat Mombasa Sports Club 5-0 at the City Park Stadium.

In this match, Rachel Ousa scored one goal in each half with Gilly Okumu (11), Carolyn Njoki (50) and Judy Apondi (69) adding one goal each. The win has them on 37 points from 16 matches while Sliders who have played 14 matches are third on 29 points.

On Sunday, Mombasa Sports Club scored their only fifth win in the league by beating Daystar University 4-0. Olypa Chepchalaga scored a goal in the 15th, 28th and 29th minutes for a 3-0 lead at half time. Alice Osoti scored the fourth goal in the 47th minute.

Telkom Orange who had no league assignment at the weekend still lead the table with 42 points from 14 matches.

In the men's Premier League, Green Sharks were held to a 2-2 draw on Saturday by Strathmore University before bouncing back to beat Mvita XI 2-0 on Sunday.

On Saturday, Festus Onyango opened the scores for Strathmore University in the third minute and Chris Wokila leveled in the 10th minute for Green Sharks. In the second half, Edgar Makete broke the deadlock for Strathmore in the 59th minute but Leon Magomere replied for Green Sharks in the 63rd minute.

On Sunday, Kevin Simiyu (31st) and Magomere (54th) scored for Green Sharks against Mvita XI. They climbed to the third spot in the league with 32 points from 18 matches.

Elsewhere, the lead at the top of the men's Premier League table changed when Kenya Police beat Nakuru 1-0 on Saturday. Nelson Ochieng scored for the policemen in the fourth minute.

Kenya Police have played 19 matches and have 48 points while Butali Warriors are on 46 points after playing 17 matches.

Strathmore bounced back with a 2-0 win over Parklands Sports Club on Sunday. Festus Onyango scored in the fourth minute and Derrick Kuloba in the 33rd minute.

On Saturday Parklands Sports Club beat Mvita 2-0 with goals from Owen Oduor (42nd) and Franklin Kiyondi (56th).

There were two men's national league fixtures. On Saturday, Kimathi University and Technical University of Kenya TUK drew 1-1 at the City Park Stadium. Elia Magiya scored for TUK in the eighth minute and Joseph Ndungu replied for Kimathi University in the 23rd minute.

On Sunday, Impala beat Daystar University 3-1. Goal scorers for Impala were Clinton Indago (25th) and Brian Odhiambo (43rd and 59th). Conrad Mandela (54th) replied for Daystar University.
