Gor Mahia and Tusker have been handed tricky fixtures in the opening round of the KPL Top 8 knockout tournament.
League champions Gor Mahia have drawn Thika United while cup holders Tusker have been paired against Sofapaka.
AFC Leopards, who are yet to make a significant impression in the tournament since its inaugural edition in 2011, will play Bandari while KCB will be up against 2011 champions Ulinzi Stars for a place in the semifinals.
The tournament will kick off on April 5 with the finals slatted for June 14. The semis will be played on a home and away basis with the aggregate winners advancing to the finals to contest the Sh 1 million prize money.
Gor Mahia, AFC Leopards, Sofapaka and KCB who occupied the top four places last season were seeded during the draw held early on Wednesday at a Nairobi hotel.
Funds generated from gate collections during the tournament will be channeled towards sponsoring the Under 19 league tournament during the August school holidays.
“As has been the case in past editions of the tournament, our aim is to raise funds and we are calling on the fans to make this an exciting tournament by attending the matches,” KPL Chief Executive Officer Jack Oguda said during the draw.
The inaugural edition of the tournament in 2011 was won by Ulinzi Stars who beat Western Stima 2-1 at Nyayo National Stadium.
The soldiers relinquished the title to Gor Mahia the following years after losing 2-0 in the final match played at Kasarani.
Last year Tusker engraved their name on the trophy, dispensing off Thika United 5-4 on post-match penalties after a 2-2 draw in regulation time at City Stadium.
In departure from the past, this year the tournament organizers intend to have matches spread over different venues in and outside Nairobi.
