Just days before the Kenyan team leaves for Daegu, South Korea, the teams management has made changes to the 10000m team brining in Paul Tanui for injured African champion Wilson Kiprop.
Head Coach Peter Mathu had earlier expressed concern over Kiprop in training last week and his fears were confirmed when they had to call in Tanui who was originally shortlisted in the All Africa Games squad.
“He has been struggling in training after picking the injury on his leg.” “Tanui is an able replacement so we are ready to go.” Kiprop, who had been touted as the favourite for the gold medal sustained the injury in training.
Athletics Kenya Secretary General David Okeyo said Prisons Kenneth Kipkemoi takes up Tanui’s place in the Maputo bound squad. “Both replacements are strong in their respective teams,” he explained.
“I don’t think this changes will affect the Daegu team as Kiprop has also been training and is in top shape.” the other members in the 10000m race are Martin Mathathi and Peter Kirui.
The Kenyan team of 48 runners including marathoners leaves on Monday,22 for Daegu.
