Sofapaka’s attempt to close the gap between them and league leaders was put on check after a 1-0 defeat at the hands of Thika United at the Nyayo National Stadium on Sunday.

Kenyan international left back, Dennis Odhiambo, accounted for the visitors’ winning goal with a powerful free kick on the stroke of half time.

Apart from Odhiambo’s goal, chances were at a premium in the first half with neither of the two sides intent on pulling the first punch.

The game lit up in the second half and Moses Arita should have doubled Thika’s lead in the 56th minute but he failed to connect to Joseph Kuria’s inviting cross.

Sofapaka for whom, Bob Mugalia was making a return after a long injury lay off struggled throughout to get a foothold on the match.

Anthony Kimani almost got them the much-sought after equalizer with a 61st minute free kick which Thika goalkeeper, Indeche Kukes, dealt with an acrobatic save.

The result – a second straight loss for Sofapaka – means Salim Ali’s men drop from second to fourth on the log with 20 points behind AFC Leopards, Tusker and Chemelil Sugar.

At Kawangware’s Hope Cente, hosts City Stars shared the spoils with Chemelil Sugar in an entertaining goalless draw.

Both sides had created a glut of chances which they failed to convert into goals.

City Stars’ Ugandan import, Dan Ssrenkuma, was menacing upfront but was guilty of spurning two decent chances in the first half.

The visitors came close to providing a twist in the tail when Chris Ombalekwa’s pile driver cannoned off the crossbar two minutes from fulltime.
