Paul Nkata, the Tusker FC coach showed just how serious he is about taking the GOtv Shield by fielding a full strength squad against third tier side Zetech University.

It paid dividends with Tusker coming out 3-0 winners and booking a slot into the quarter finals, going one better than last year when they bowed out in the last 16.

Goals from Antony Ndolo, Danson Kago and Allan Wanga rounded up an easy win for the alemen. The win did not come easy for Nkata and his charges who were made to sweat by the scholars.

The win enhances Tusker's chance for a rare double. They currently lead the Kenyan Premier league standings with a healthy seven point gap.

But Nkata has refused to be drawn into a discussion whether his side can go for a double this season, especially to win a domestic cup for the first time since 1993. “It is not as easy as it looks. We can’t talk of that now but only work hard,” Nkata said.

In the ninth minute, Tusker was in the lead. Wanga raced to dispossess Zetech keeper Simon Imbachile after he delayed with the ball in a dangerous area.

Ndolo had the easiest of tasks, tapping the ball home after Wanga had squared it back. Tusker doubled their lead in the 25th minute, Kago scoring from a close range after the Zetech defence failed to clear Shafik Batambuze’s corner.

Ferocious shot

Wanga made it 3-0 five minutes later with a ferocious shot after picking up a deep pass from Hashim Ssempala. The former El mereikh and Azam FC forward came close to completing a brace two minutes later but could not get his technique right as he attempted a diving header from a Kago cross.

Nkata made three changes at a go in the second half, Cersidy Lumumba, Robert Omunuk and Ndolo paving way for Humphrey Mieno, Luis Misiko and Clifford Alwanga. Mieno was making his first appearance having been out with a knee injury for four weeks.

With Tusker resting on their laurels and turning the game into passing practice, Zetech upped their tempo and came close but Martin Musalia twice denied them.

Isaac Njau who was later awarded man-of-the match for his industrious displays forced Musalia to a superb save in the 70th minute with a volley on the half turn from the edge of the box.

Antonio Abwao had a late chance after dribbling into the box but his shot once again forced a spectacular save off Musalia.
