A clinical Telkom Orange converted four penalty corners as the defending champions beat Mombasa Sports Club 5-0 win in a Kenya Hockey Union women’s Premier League match at Mombasa Sports Club ground on Sunday.

This was their sixth win of the season to open up a commanding nine-point lead at the summit of the table.

Telkom Orange assistant Josephine Ataro was without injured midfielder Lilian Aura and captain Tracy Wanjiku. They did not travel with the squad.

In their absence, Glennis Namasake and Caroline Guchu got their first starts of the season. Playing away from the familiar astro turf based in Nairobi did little to deter Telkom Orange’s resolve.

They took the lead through veteran striker Jackline Mwangi in the 11th minute. It was 2-0 before the break when speedy wing player Maureen Okumu reacted quickest to convert a penalty corner by Audrey Omaido in the 27th minute.

Although she did not score, Omaido’s influence on set pieces was impeccable as she delivered all her team’s penalty corners for the other three goals.

First, Terry Juma moved from her defensive position to score in the 33rd minute before Mwangi was on hand to get her brace in the 44th minute.

Okumu also scored a brace when she rounded up the scoring in the 58th minute.

“It is another win for us and we have maintained a clean sheet. We want to continue playing with this form. We have depth in our squad and those players who came in today did a good job,” Ataro said.

University derby

At the City Park Stadium, first half goals by Rahab Nyuthe and Nelly Ogutu were enough as Kenyatta University saw off Multimedia University 2-0 in a university derby.

Nyuthe struck in the seventh minute with a cool finish before Ogutu sounded the board in the 27th minute.

Multimedia University failed to conjure meaningful chances against their fellow students who were tactfully superior.

In the men's Premier League, goal poacher Dolcan Mugaisi scored a brace as Nakuru Athletic Club recovered from a goal down to pick up a vital 2-1 away win over Kenya College of Accountancy-University.

NAC came into this match on the backdrop of a crushing 0-4 defeat at the hands of league leaders Kenya Police on Saturday.

NAC coach Anthony Agesa’s decision to adjust his lineup from the previous match paid dividends with Mugaisi restored to the starting 11. Agesa lauded the team’s fighting spirit.

“It was a difficult match because they were very fast on the ball and recovered well in defence. At least we have the three points and we will not go back empty handed,” Agesa said.

The two teams were evenly matched in the opening few minutes with the students looking more menacing going forward.

KCA-U were duly rewarded in the 11th with a fine finish from Ken Gachara who skillfully steered the ball past goalkeeper Dennis Mageto.

The second half brought much promise from NAC who pulled level through Mugaisi from Collins Cheloti’s penalty corner in the 42nd minute.

The turnaround was completed 10 minutes later when Mugaisi found space for himself before beating Collins Odongo from close range.
