World, Africa champions set for Africa Youth Olympic trials

World Youth champion Rosefline Chepngetich and Africa junior cross country silver medalist Andrew Lorot are set to compete for spots on the Kenya youth Olympics track and field team this Saturday, when Athletics Kenya picks the squad that will travel to Gaborone, Botswana.

The trials will be held at the Nyayo National Stadium ahead of the Youth Olympics set for May 22- 31.

Besides Chepngetich, the gold medalist in the 2000m Steeplechase, Irvin Chepkemoi 6th at the world youth event in Donetsk, Ukraine last year in the 1500m will also be in action.

Lorot fresh from winning the National Secondary Cross Country in Mombasa will be competing in the 3000m men alongside Davis Kiplagat who was second in the School Games in Mombasa. Maureen Thomas, a top performer at the just concluded relays series with the leading time nationally in 200m of 24.2 tops the sprinting probable.

Others include Lilian Kasait, the 2013 World Youth Champion who will battle it out with Loise Chemning, finalists in the African Cross country in Kampala in March.

Kenya will send a team of 167 sportsmen and women from seventeen sports disciplines to Botwana and will have a two week residential camp from May 5 to May 17.
